Dragon Lawyers and the Jevons Paradox of Legal AI
A law firm called “Dragon Lawyers” filed court papers with a cartoon dragon watermark on every page until a federal judge ordered them to stop.
When I first read this story, I was speechless — not because it was funny (though it was). Dragon Lawyers isn’t an anomaly. It’s a preview. As the legal market expands, we’re going to see more firms pushing boundaries to stand out.
Jevons Paradox
Jevons Paradox occurs when technological improvements make a resource more efficient to use, but instead of reducing consumption, total demand actually increases. Think steam engines making coal cheaper, which led to more coal consumption, not less.
As AI makes legal work cheaper and more accessible, we’re not going to see less legal activity. We could see a lot more of it. And with that expansion comes… well, cartoon dragons on federal court filings.
What this means for professional services
The efficiency gains from AI tools are lowering the barrier to entry for legal services. More people can afford lawyers. More firms are competing for attention in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
This is what happens when your industry gets disrupted by efficiency gains. You get more demand, yes. But you also get behavior that’s completely ridiculous.
For firms trying to stand out in this new landscape, the differentiator won’t be gimmicks — it’ll be operational excellence. Firms that capture every billable minute, communicate value clearly, and run lean operations will win. The ones filing papers with cartoon watermarks… probably won’t.
